In December 2011, the Government of Myanmar approved a new law on Microfinance which legalized the provision of microfinance and allowed foreign investors to establish Microfinance Institutions in Myanmar. This new Law is seen as part of the transformation process from an isolated military regime to a democracy that adopts the principles of an open market economy.

As expansion in the region is part of the long term plan of ACLEDA MFI Myanmar Co., Ltd., ACLEDA MFI Myanmar's Management undertook action to study the opportunities and challenges of expanding its microfinance operations in Myanmar. With support of the ACLEDA Training Center an investment delegation was organized early February 2012 with representatives of ACLEDA MFI Myanmar Co., Ltd., KfW, FMO, Triodos Bank, Lanka Orix, Bridge, Dragon Capital and BRAC. The delegation met with representatives from the Central MFI, with representatives from key Government ministries, and with all main players in microfinance in Myanmar. Based on the findings of this mission this feasibility study was prepared and approved by ACLEDA MFI Myanmar's management at the end of February 2012.

ACLEDA MFI Myanmar Co., Ltd. is a company limited given the certificate of incorporation No.96 FC of 2012-2013 by Directorate of Investment and Company Administration of Myanmar on September 06, 2012 with the initial paid up capital 8 billion Kyats or round USD 10 million, and granted the Microfinance Business License as Deposit taking on February 08th, 2013 and until August 28th, 2014 we have received the license to operate in 45 townships in Yangon Region and 28 Townships in Bago Region.

ACLEDA MFI Myanmar Co., Ltd. is the oversea subsidiary of ACLEDA Bank Plc. with 55% holding by ACLEDA Bank Plc. and others three shareholders such as IFC, COFIBRED S.A. and KfW holding share 15% per each.
